I am the lead programmer/analyst for the Cornell University Energy Management and Control System (EMCS). It is a supervisory system for building automation (direct digital control of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems) on campus. It is a loosely coupled cluster of Linux servers, LAMPish, with everything written in Python but a small handful of C extensions.
My current work, nicknamed the Total Perspective Vortex, involves creating an semantic wiki engine that can navigate the noosphere of facilities, utilities (electric power, networking, chilled water, steam distribution), occupants (researchers, students, staff), activity, and energy consumption. The distinguishing characteristic of the TPV, apart from begin a federated database system, is the ability to reference real-time data (pressure, temperature, flow, power) and historical trends.
